Injectables Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox is a form of botulinum toxin that temporarily eliminates moderate to deep facial wrinkles. When injected into a muscle, Botox blocks the nerve signals that trigger muscle contractions. As a result, the muscle relaxes and stays that way until the Botox wears off.

Since it targets muscles, Botox is the perfect choice for crow’s feet, frown lines, and forehead creases, which years of repetitive muscle movements cause. As the muscles relax, the wrinkles significantly diminish or disappear. You see the effect in 24-48 hours after your injections, and your results last up to four months.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are injected directly under your skin, where they perform several jobs, depending on the filler used. Some plump up wrinkles, while others restore volume or stimulate collagen production to help strengthen your skin. Dr. Rawal can customize your treatment because she offers a variety of dermal fillers, including:

Juvéderm

Juvéderm is the brand name for a line of fillers that naturally plump and hydrate your skin using hyaluronic acid in a gel base. As a group, these fillers treat moderate to severe wrinkles around your mouth and nose, lift your cheeks, add volume to your mid-face, and plump your lips. Depending on which Juvéderm filler you use, your results should last 6-9 months.

Restylane

Restylane products also contain hyaluronic acid in a gel that’s formulated differently for the targeted area. For example, the product designed for lip augmentation is injected with an ultrafine needle. Restylane has a filler designed to add volume to the back of your hands and formulas to augment cheeks and treat wrinkles around your mouth. Restylane treatments last 6-9 months and sometimes longer, depending on the product used and the site injected.

Radiesse

Radiesse is different from other injectables because it contains microspheres of calcium suspended in a gel. The calcium immediately restores volume and stimulates collagen production. While your body gradually absorbs the calcium, the boost in collagen delivers results that may last 12-18 months.

Sculptra Aesthetic

Sculptra Aesthetic is made from an FDA-approved biocompatible ingredient, poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which activates collagen production. This product treats laugh lines, marionette lines, and chin wrinkles. Most patients need three injections over the course of 3-4 months, but then your results can last greater than two years.

What is Kybella?

Kybella targets a different problem than the other injectables: It permanently eliminates fat under your chin. The active ingredient in Kybella is deoxycholic acid, a substance naturally found inside your body where it helps digest dietary fats. When injected, deoxycholic acid breaks down the nearby fat cells. After your body clears away the waste, the fat is gone for good.
