Low Level Laser Light Hair Therapy Q & A

What causes male- and female-pattern balding?

Each hair follicle cycles through four stages: Growth, transition, resting, and shedding. On any day, about 90% of your hair is growing, while 10-20% is resting, which is why you naturally shed about 100 hairs every day.

Male- and female-pattern balding develop when sensitivity to the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) shortens the growth stage. As a result, your hair becomes shorter and weaker. If the condition goes untreated, the follicle keeps shrinking until it finally stops growing hair. Introducing low-level laser light therapy before the follicle damage becomes permanent can restore hair growth.

What is low-level laser light hair therapy?

Most medical lasers use heat to produce results, but low-level laser light therapy (LLLT) is different. LLLT operates on a distinct wavelength that produces cool laser light energy. LLLT safely passes through your skin without causing damage and reaches cells in your hair follicles.

How does low-level laser therapy restore hair loss?

As LLLT activates cells in your hair follicles, it stimulates biochemical processes, causing an:

  • Increase in energy production
  • Increase in blood circulation in the follicle
  • Increase in nutrients and oxygen supplied to the follicle
  • Increase in the rate of removal of harmful hormones like DHT

LLLT also reduces inflammation in the follicle. The overall result is that LLLT activates cell growth and regeneration, heals the follicle, and leads to renewed hair growth.

What should I expect during low-level laser light hair therapy?

During your Sunetics LLLT treatment at The Rawal Institute for Hair Restoration and Aesthetic Medicine, you sit comfortably in a chair, while Dr. Rawal places the helmet-like device over the top of your head. As the device emits LLLT, you relax and read — there’s no heat and no pain throughout your 20-30 minute session.

Most patients prefer to receive their LLLT from the comfort of their own home, rather than traveling to the office multiple times weekly.  Dr. Rawal prescribes the Dermascalp LLLT device, which features the highest energy output of any portable LLLT device available.  With 272 laser diodes (no LEDs), and an energy output of 3.5J/cm2, the Dermascalp device is safe, efficient and effective.  Your results typically appear in three stages:

  • Stage 1 - A decrease in excessive hair loss around 4-6 weeks
  • Stage 2 - Your hair becomes fuller, thicker, and healthier between 6 weeks to 5 months
  • Stage 3 - Your hair regrows into normal, thick hair between 3-6 months

As long as your hair follicles are still viable, Sunetics and Dermascalp low-level laser light hair therapy treatments may be a great option for restoring your hair.
